Green Machine History

The Green Machine Jazz Ensemble was created in the Summer of 2005 by Alexander Spycher and Ryan Carlson, as they were entering their Senior year at Clackamas High School. Both being alto saxophone players, they searched for a rhythm section and found Kenneth MacDaniels on percussion, James Pham on guitar, James Larson on bass, and Scott Bradner on piano. Soon after, Ian Westerlund on baritone saxophone joined the band, which completed their seven-piece ensemble. After a month of rehearsing in the Clackamas High School band room, the band director, Mr. Jeffrey Betts, began referring the Green Machine to perform at various events. They became known as a sub-division of the Clackamas High School Band Department and played for grand openings of business and park dedications.

This collection of gigs coupled with hard work led the band to stay together after high school. Having members attending several different colleges, the Green Machine was able to make more music connections. The Green Machine has performed at many educational institutions, including Mount Hood Community College, University of Oregon and University of Portland. As more performing opportunities presented themselves, the Green Machine began branching off into trios and quartets for private parties and restaurant dinners. The Green Machine has also played for many private, family-oriented performances including a 50th Wedding Anniversary and an 80th Birthday Party, as well as Coty Prestige Fragrance trend shows at many different Macy's locations.

On September 3rd, 2009, co-founder and beloved band manager of the Green Machine, Alexander Spycher, passed away of a heart attack at the age of 21. Working toward the dreams that were shared by everyone, the Green Machine is pushing forward, and seeking new heights. The band now consists of Ryan Carlson, alto saxophone; Jared Caranto, alto saxophone; Ian Westerlund, baritone saxophone; Alex Domres, guitar; Dan Gonzales, guitar and piano;
James Pham, guitar and bass; Darin O'Brien, bass; and Kenneth MacDaniels, percussion. Having performed at a variety of different venues (bars, restaurants, banquets, country clubs, parks) the Green Machine Jazz Ensemble is a versatile band that can complement any event.
